Witnessing Michael Jackson & Co. Create "We Are The World"

“Witnessing Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, and Quincy Jones Create “We Are The World” by USA For Africa."

One of the greatest memories in my musical career is witnessing the making of USA For Africa’s “We Are The World” project. This project was (and still is) the biggest collection of Stars coming together to make a recording for a charitable cause. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (better known as Nicole Richie’s pappy to you young folks:) and Quincy Jones produced.

You might be wondering, why am I referencing a song that was done back in the ‘80s? Well, my whole purpose is to share some of the knowledge that I’ve witnessed because many of these concepts and techniques will never be seen again. It’s a different time now and people write songs and make music differently today.

One thing that always stands the test of time, is a well crafted song with a strong melody and great lyrics. A hit song and a hit record are 2 very different things.

The thing that separates the “Best of the Best” is that they NEVER settle for being just “good enough”. The reason why they achieve massive success is that they do more than the average person does. To get extraordinary results, you have to put out EXTRA-ORDINARY effort.

One of the most educational things for me was to hear Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie (with Quincy Jones overseeing it all), voice their thought process concerning the lyrics. To hear exactly WHY they would change certain words and phrases, was very enlightening. Below are the lyrics and I will paraphrase a few of the things that I remember about HOW AND WHY they were changed to make them more effective.

<<<<<<<<<< “We Are The World” Lyrical Analysis >>>>>>>>>>

( 1st Verse ) There comes a time when we heed a certain call (Lionel Richie) When the world must come together as one (Lionel Richie & Stevie Wonder) There are people dying (Stevie Wonder)

• (originally, it said “there are children dying” because they were starving in Africa and that was the whole reason for doing this.

• What was amazing, was to hear them discuss why they should change that phrase to “there are PEOPLE dying” because the song is called “WE Are The World” and even though you saw images of starving children on television every day, that’s a shocking sight to watch, and people may become de-sensitized after a while. But if you say PEOPLE, then it INCLUDES EVERYBODY so it will be more touching. Just Brilliant.)

Oh, and it’s time to lend a hand to life (Paul Simon) The greatest gift of all (Paul Simon/Kenny Rogers) ( 2nd Verse ) We can’t go on pretending day by day (Kenny Rogers) That someone, somehow will soon make a change (James Ingram) We’re all a part of God’s great big family (Tina Turner) And the truth (Billy Joel) You know love is all we need (Tina Turner/Billy Joel)

( CHORUS ) We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day so let’s start giving (Michael Jackson) There’s a choice we’re making - we’re saving our own lives (Diana Ross)

• (originally, I think it said “There’s a CHANCE WE’RE TAKING-We’re saving ALL THEIR LIVES” and they discussed changing it. They didn’t want people to think that they were “taking a chance” to help out, so they changed it to “There’s a CHOICE WE’RE MAKING-We’re SAVING OUR OWN LIVES”. Wouldn’t YOU make the choice to save YOUR OWN Life instead of THEIR Lives.

• These changes were made to ENGAGE the listener like the quotation, “There, but for the grace of God, go I” - It could easily be you or me. Instead of being just observers of the problem, we’ll all become participants toward the solution. Again, this is absolutely brilliant thinking because, what is the title to this song? --->“WE Are The World”. They never forget that fact.) •

It’s true we’ll make a better day just you and me (Michael Jackson/Diana Ross) (there was a discussion about effectively using the words “brighter day” and “better day”)

( 3rd Verse ) Well, send ’em your heart so they know that someone cares (Dionne Warwick) And their lives will be stronger and free (Dionne Warwick/Willie Nelson) As God has shown us by turning stone to bread (Willie Nelson) And so we all must lend a helping hand (Al Jarreau)

( REPEAT CHORUS ) We are the world, we are the children (Bruce Springsteen) We are the ones who make a brighter day so let’s start giving (Kenny Loggins) There’s a choice we’re making we’re saving our own lives (Steve Perry) It’s true we’ll make a better day just you and me (Daryl Hall)

( BRIDGE ) When you’re down and out there seems no hope at all (Michael Jackson) But if you just believe there’s no way we can fall (Huey Lewis) Well, well, well, let’s realize that a change can only come (Cyndi Lauper) When we (Kim Carnes) stand together as one (Kim Carnes/Cyndi Lauper/Huey Lewis)

(REPEAT CHORUS AND FADE ) (additional ad-lib vox by Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, James Ingram) (Casting of each voice to each line was vocal choreography at it’s best - Quincy was amazing to listen to - he just seems to always know how to pull it all together.) ( END )

• While there are no guaranteed formulas for getting a hit record, there ARE formulas that will help you craft your songs better. You can literally MAKE people do what you want with well crafted words.

Lyric CRAFTING is becoming a dying art. I urge all Songwriters, Singers, and Musicians who read this article to use these insights on you own songs. YOUR well crafted lyrics and melodies can truly last forever.

The Last of the Mohicans

The war novel “The Last of the Mohicans” contains a deep morale in itself. It teaches people that courage is the best solution to fear. Any problems that a person faces can be overcome, and it only takes one step to it-courage.

The characters exhibit courage in many different circumstances. The novel follows three men traveling through the woods. Two of them are Mohican Indians, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, and the other is a white man raised by the Indians, Hawkeye. One day these men encounter a caravan of English soldiers led by Major Duncan Hayward. This caravan is in charge of escorting Colonel Munro's daughters, Alice and Cora, to Fort William Henry where their father is. When the three Mohicans encounter the group they decide that they will help lead the English to the Fort, but what they do not know is that the evil Magua is out to get them, this fact leads to an endless chase.

Through this long game of chase many of these characters exhibit a great deal of courage. Cora overcomes many fears that one would not believe she could handle. When the group decides to hide in a dark cave as being traced by the Hurons, Cora does not seem alarmed by this, "'is then our danger so pressing'" . At one point in the novel Magua captures her sister and Cora is left with a decision to make, surrender herself to the enemy to be with her sister or to run away, "notwithstanding the horror excited by the presence of her captor…she took her seat…and held forth her arms for her sister". Cora knows that she must take care of her sister. At the end of the novel Cora is captured by Magua and is being dragged along as he is trying to escape the Mohicans, and Cora knows that she must stop. She exclaims to the Magua that she, "will go no farther…kill me if thy wilt… detestable Huron…I will go no farther".

Although Magua is an evil character, he shows both moral and physical courage. Magua has a strong moral courage, even after he is struck by Hawkeye; he does not stop trying, "turning a relentless look on his enemy…he shook a hand in grim defiance". He knows that he must not give up. His morals are not good, but he believes strongly in them, "while he was making this ostensible sacrifice to general considerations…Magua never lost sight of his individual motives".

He does not let things stand on his way or change his mind; he will hold close to his morals not matter what. This is what keeps him from being defeated, he is extremely, and physically, courageous and will not stop fighting until he is defeated, but unfortunately for him, he is overcome by Hawkeye and his courageousness finds a quick ending.

Uncas shows a great deal of courage in the novel as well, even though bullets are flying over his head Uncas does not lose his concentration and keeps paddling on. Most of Uncas' courageous strength is due to his physical qualities, he is determined to rescue Cora, and will not give up. He often illustrates, through courage, a superhuman quality that ultimately leads him to death, but he lacks courage in the moral aspect. Uncas is a strong and courageous man, and he is determined that he will never fail in what he tries to do, even if it leads him to death.

Through out the length of the novel Hawkeye exhibits all three acts of courage, expressed in three different ways, inner, physical, and moral, and it would take all three of these acts to be able to leave off the land. He has a strong and brave soul that allows him to do this, he is confident in himself and his actions too.

All of these characters exhibit much strength in the inner, physical and moral aspect. Cora, Magua, and Uncas, all show courage in different ways, but lack in others. Hawkeye on the other hand shows courageous acts abound. It seems like Cooper made the main character of the novel the most courageous, because of all of the problems that he faces, not only does Hawkeye have to face them but he also overcomes them. He is strong at heart and body, which allows him to overcome difficulties. With The Last of the Mohicans Chingachgook, the Indian is meant. He and his son Uncas are the last of the tribe of the Mohicans, and after Uncas was murdered Chingachgook was the last of the Mohicans.

German Memories in Asia The Memorable Moments of Our Tsunami Mission!

We were moving fast and in a few minutes we reached the military barrier.

We didn’t have any difficulty crossing the military and LTTE barriers.

While on our way the kerosene-lit houses made us wonder whether we were in this century or some centuries behind.

By the time we reached the Kilinochchi town the German Praktikum (Internship) students were in a sleepy mood.

We stopped at the “Pandyan” restaurant for dinner.

We savoured the hospitality of the restaurant during the last two-day stay in Kilinochchi.

I was sitting next to Dr. Jayalath and at our table were Fredrike Wagnar, Dietmar Doring and some other German intern students.

Fredrike Wagnar had had stomach up-set for a few days since her visit into the jungle interior.

The spicy foods might have caused it. But one cannot rule out that the micro-organisms in the water too might have contributed to it.

Some of the micro-organisms in the small ponds were deadly and caused even deaths in the past.

Fredrike was using canned mineral water and there was no chance micro-organisms got into her system.

Dr. Jayalath was telling me “why you can’t advise her that what she is eating is not good for her”.

But I kept silent not wanting to spoil her appetite.

Though Dr. Jayalath repeatedly asked me to advise her, I refrained.

One could not help watching Fredrike’s care and concern at the restaurant garden when she was tending to an infant who was with the mother inside a van.

Fredrike extended one of her fingers into the tiny palm, and the infant immediately seized Fredrike’s finger as tightly as possible.

I noticed Freidke was enjoying those moments.

The basic mother-child instinct was reflected in those moments.

We began our departure from Kilinochchi and our vehicles sped along to reach the barriers of the LTTE and Sri Lanka Army.

The students were in a drowsy mood.

We reached the LTTE barrier in a couple of hours and passed it without difficulty.

We were moving in the no-man-zone, a one-time heavily mined territory.

Though at the LTTE barrier a huge board gave warning of land mines, there were casualties.

A herd of cattle and wild animals were maimed or killed.

Such deadly mines around the world were laid even in deserts.

Ironically while the cost to produce a landmine is as little as three US dollars removing it cost much more than thousand US dollars.

We approached the military barrier and again we had to stop for the clearance.

The military officers were coming to us in a jovial mood and trying to talk to some of the German students.

We couldn’t use the usual main highway and had to deviate from it before we joined the highway again.

It was likely that the highway could have been mined.

I was worried when the students stepped into the side-ways as though to satisfy an adventurous instinct or may be out of happiness.

The landmines issue is a global problem.

These deadly landmines kill and maim hundreds of civilians every year in Iraq.

In the Kurdistan territory of Northern Iraq about one person a day steps on a mine.

Afghanistan is boasting ironically having the largest industry not other than the de-mining.

We finally cleared from the last barrier of our northern mission and were moving further towards South.

Our vehicles in a few minutes drive, stopped near the Vavuniya town once again for having tea break.

Vavuniya is the heavily guarded last town in the northern mainland of the Island, which is controlled by the Sri Lankan Government.

But the town is under the heavy influence of LTTE.

As it was midnight, and the streets were deserted, We could hardly see people in the streets.

Some of the students roamed the streets leisurely.

They awed by the eerie atmosphere of the war-ravaged town’s calm.

We had short eats and tea at one of the few open hotels.

After a while of relax we started our journey once again.

We reached a junction in Anuradhapura, an ancient historical city of the Island, where one road led to the hill country and the other towards the western coastal area of the Island.

Top 10 Things Never Heard in the Batmobile

Batman and his Batmobile are connected like any man and his bodacious ride should be. The Batmobile that lived in the 60’s with massive overstated fins and the double bubble cockpit was a reflection of the times. It was Batman as innocent and uncontroversial as my grandmother who’s a Sunday School teacher. Cartoon-ish violence was hidden behind multicolored “Pow’s” or “Wham’s”. Yet every time that Danger Road Closed sign went down and the Batmobile screamed past with REAL flames shooting out the back, a generation fell in love with Batman. In the 80’s when the fins pointed up, the mood was darker, the gadgets were cooler and people still wanted to be Batman. In the 90’s with the unrealistic, elongated Batmobile and the equally unrealistic dialogue, doubt started to take hold. No one wanted to be that Batman. After seeing Batman Begins with its gritty rendering of Batman and the harsh all-terrain version of the Batmobile, I believe in the Bat again. The Batmobile as a blatantly rugged assault vehicle never occurred to me but after a few nasty chase scenes, I’m a believer. With a more callous, justice fighter on the loose I began thinking about what you wouldn’t hear in this Batmobile.

Top ten things never heard in the Batmobile

10. I’ve been thinking about getting a Mini Cooper, how much would you give me as a trade-in?
9. We can’t make out in the backseat. My baby’s carseat is back there.
8. Yeah, I’ll take a salad with fat free ranch ON THE SIDE and a diet coke easy on the ice.
7. Listen, Ernest if you can’t pay your share of the gas, we might not let you carpool with us.
6. On your left you will notice Joan River’s lovely home. The incomparable star of silent films, Valentino, once owned it. Coming up on your right…
5. They didn’t lie, that really is the world’s biggest ball of yarn.
4. Have you ever had fruitcake this moist and delicious? It’s simply divine.
3. Remember that time at band camp?
2. Do you think Lawrence Welk is frontin’ or is he legit?
1. Batman, your turn signal has been blinking for the last 8 miles.

5 Tips for Independent Film Producers How to Survive the Turbulent Years Ahead

The Falling Value of Film Entertainment

Forty years ago, people who wanted to see a movie on a Friday night had just a few options. They could watch what was on TV, they could go to the local drive-in, or they could go to the local movie theater. The advent of video stores that sold hundreds or thousands of movies on video tape/DVD gave people new alternatives. They could watch this week's new movie at the movie theater, or take in last winter's box office smash in their own home. The technology required to burn tapes and DVDs subsequently turned every home in to a lending library for film and video. The rise of two-hundred-channel cable companies gave us two-hundred channels with something on. Now the best selling studio and independent films are available for download from from sites like video.google.com, www.movielink.com, www.unbox.com and www.itunes.com.

As the rise in movie viewing options has increased, the average box office value of new films has fallen. That's hard to believe isn't it.

Block busters like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter mask the truth that more movies are being made by more people than ever before and yet the estimated revenue for each film is actually falling. Tens of thousands of feature films and documentaries are now available for sale through a variety of venues. A growing number of producers are making their movies available for free online in the hopes that they will develop a following that will result in "sell-able films" later on.

The falling value of the average movie has dramatic implications on the lives of people who make movies for a living.

Five Survival Strategies

Consider selling your products directly to viewers without going through standard distribution channels. A producer investing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on film for distribution on DVD should set aside a quarter or more of that budget for a media campaign that targets the market for the film. If they spend that budget wisely, customers will be looking for the film. Producers who find a solid, reliable international storefront for their films keep the percentage usually allocated to a traditional film distributor. For example, if you post your film on www.CustomFlix.com, your customers will be able to buy your DVD through Amazon (and soon download it through www.UnBox.com). You receive 60%-70% of product sales every month and retain complete control over your content, rather than waiting months or years for distributors to send checks.

Be very careful when choosing more traditional film distributors. Many distributors will evaporate in the months and years to come due to competition from turn-key distribution solutions offered by large, well funded competitors. You do not want distributors to have control over your content when they go under. Work with distributors who deliver cost-effective, fast-launch, flexible multi-national multimedia distribution and marketing solutions for their customers. Make sure there's an escape clause if they go into bankruptcy or fail to provide timely payments or accounting.

Work directly with community theaters, activist groups and social networks to have your films shown. "Four-walling" which used to be considered an amateur filmmaker's trick was demonstrated to be a sound business strategy by Mel Gibson's block buster The Passion of the Christ. That movie was premiered to Christian communities across the United States and their word of mouth drove it to be one of the most successful independent films ever made.

Work with your screenwriters to focus on less expensive, more character-driven films that target under-served market segments. There are tens of thousands of writers trying to write a great tent-pole film. The competition is fierce, the number of producers/studios who can fund that film is small. There's are far fewer writers/producers focusing on writing Christian science fiction or Christian mysteries although the Left Behind books and the DiVinci code indicate those markets exist and spend money.

Find funding through angel investors rather than through more traditional lending and investment mechanisms. Movies are a risky business, and they are growing more risky all the time. Fortunately the cost of making them is also falling fast. Angel investors will often pay to have a movie made as part of an artistic statement or act of community involvement while other investors will be driven more directly for a desire for profit. Producers will assemble groups of angel investors who fund projects, and those investors may elect to make their money available as grants rather than as loans or stock ownership. "Rich Patrons" may well be on their way back and they are certainly worth cultivating.

Evolve to Survive

Some trends are irreversible. Horses gave way to cars. Silent movies gave way to talking pictures. The movie industry is changing radically.

Those who want to make and sell movies for a living must revise their methods accordingly. They must make more films for less money, and the films they make must be better targeted so they are more cost-effective to sell. The good news is, great scripts, exceptional acting talent, strong technical skills and good business sense will be enough to give many producers the great careers they deserve and many viewers will end up with "new classics" to watch.

Is Our World a Huge Multifaceted Game orchestrated by a Superior Being

Armageddon, is it upon us? Are we in the final seven years of our present day world?

From the very beginning of existences, scientists, and great thinkers of all times have been trying to figure out the evolution of our world. They believe and teach that a huge explosion erupted scattering particles that came together and formed the solar system and later put together the human race and all things surrounding our world. Yet today they fear that our world is at a point where extinction is possible, because of the way we have abused the resources of our planet.

Theologians believe God created the universe and earth. Using the Bible as the ultimate authority of how our world was formed and how human life came into being. They believe that according to the Word of God our world is coming to the end.

Today a new and different theory has come to the surface. The idea that our world was formed as a playing field. An elaborate Life Game where people's sole purpose are to be put to the test. Tests that are meant to change them for the more perfect world to come.

Look at how our world has been formed and how people and our environment interact within every human being's life. If we are in a Life Game then our world must be more than the physical and concrete of our present day lives.

To be in a Great Game of Life is to acknowledge that we are like puppets under the influence of a greater and higher intelligence. A Creator, who must influence our thinking and lead us down paths to reveal the greatest purpose behind the Game of Life, a divine plan for human evolution.

To play the Game of Life is to understand the unexplained happenings within the makeup of the human consciousness. One of these mysteries is revealed in the anomaly that as human beings we only use 10 percent of our brains.

Scientist have for years speculated that the remaining 90 percent of the brain must be some sort of storage ground. In the game of life it is speculated that this part of our brain is the very core where the battle between right and wrong is fought. A Spiritual existence that leads us to paths of learning.

While our world only needs 10 percent of our brains for us to live in the concrete, our Game of Life needs 90 percent in order for us to play our game to gain the maximum level of achievement.

In a game no one knows the outcome until it comes to the end. This is the very reason why we come to this world not knowing we are in a game. To know we are in a game is to win before we ever begin.

Not knowing we are in a game gradually takes us through life experiences revealing secrets little by little. That is the reason why we have the unexplained areas in our brain. This area is our spiritual existence that pushes us into each different experience we must go through in order to achieve the goals for our particular game.

When we suffer we are lead into different levels of understanding that reveals to us the difference between right and wrong. This game is so complex because it uses every fiber of our human makeup in order to help us to come to a truth.

A truth that reveals the evil ways of our present day world. A message that brings us through the tribulations of life and leads us to revelations.

The whole goal of our existences is to be changed into new people. A person full of compassion for our fellowman and who does not judge, because we have learned to endure the pain of unjust suffering. That is the purpose behind living in a corrupt and evil world.

To think of how our world game has been formed is to unlock the complexities of our existence. Remember to be part of a game we must be challenged. How better to do this than to have a world with people of multi-ethnic backgrounds and different lifestyles.

Our belief systems plus how our different governments work opposing each other reveal the difference that help us to come to the ultimate conclusions of who is wise and who is ignorant.

While one government promotes democracy another demands communism. While Christians believe in Jesus, Muslims believe in Ala and Hindus' believe in Buddha. All of our different beliefs combined with our different lifestyles challenges us as we learn revelations while we proceed down the different paths of life.

It is a known fact that each person's life is predisposed to a particular personality and to different levels of intelligence. In our Game of Life each person's life has a destiny completely designed to navigate through this world on a certain path.

That is the reason why some people are doctors, while others are mechanics and barbers. Our world is carefully put together giving each person a direction in life they must accomplish in order to bring about a balance for the world's game.

In order to play the game to the highest degree of achievement we must have a belief system. We must either believe in the world or we must believe in a Higher Being. This is why in order to win we must believe in God.

If we don't believe in God then we are limited to this world's way of handling life. When we place our faith in the unseen God then we expand our world and are open to the deeper complexities found through knowing the truth surrounding the spiritual dimension of our existence.

Today people are experiencing greater levels of testings with the inventions brought on by the communications industries. We see world events unfolding on our televisions. We hear about how our destructive use of our natural resources have influenced the earths atmosphere. We see the devastation brought on by hurricanes, floods and all forms of natural disasters.

Today even the motives of our world leaders are brought out for all people to see and understand. Nothing is hidden any longer all things about our weak human existence is being revealed because it is time to understand that our world game is about to end.

Now is the time for all people to see that they are not in this world to lead their lives for what the world has to offer. Our battle is one of learning, but just like a board game must end so the Game of Life must end. We are here for a greater purpose. A purpose that reaches beyond this world and into an eternal existence.

The Story of Smokey Bear

Smokey Bear the icon was born in the mind of Rudy Wendelin, who was an artist for the U.S. Forest Service. In 1944 the Forest Service authorized his poster of Smokey Bear as the symbol for fire prevention.

The real life Smokey Bear was discovered in 1950 in the Capitan mountains in New Mexico. Firefighters were battling a powerful human caused wildfire when they came upon a bear cub which had climbed a tree to escape the flames. When firefighters finally were able to rescue the bear cub, he had been badly burned. The firefighters nursed him back to health, named him Smokey Bear, and the living symbol of Smokey Bear was born.

Smokey Bear was eventually flown to the National Zoo in Washington D.C. where his legend and popularity grew around the world. Smokey Bear became an international superstar and the popularity of the Forest Service’s ad campaign grew and grew. Smokey Bear became so popular that congress passed a law governing the commercialization of the name and image of Smokey Bear. Smokey Bear also received his own zip code because of the huge amounts of fan mail he received from fans across the globe.

Smokey Bear is the only individual animal to be honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a stamp. In 1984 the USPS released a stamp created by the original artist Rudy Wendelin, depicting Smokey Bear clinging to a burnt tree with the Smokey Bear emblem in the background.

The Smokey Bear campaign is the longest running public ad campaign in U.S. History. Smokey’s forest fire prevention message remained unchanged for 50 years until the Ad Council updated his message to address the growing number of forest fires around the U.S.

Good Nutrition And Exercises Key To Our Health

Probably nutrition and exercises are the most important things that enable our body and immune system to stay strong and healthy. There are various ways to keep yourself healthy and fit and you don’t have to suffer from training endlessly in the gym or limit your eating habits. All you need to do is, first of all, understand what food is healthy and important for your health, and what is not. Nutrition and exercise is important in developing a strong body and immune system. Consuming the proper portions of food will build a strong immune system, and body. Eating properly will also promote a better mental well being, and over all good health. There are guidelines you can learn, and nutrition labels you can observe so that you may understand and use nutrition wisely.

Exercise is also very important for your body structure and vital organs. Exercise done properly and consistent can help you control weight, and also promote over all good health. There are two types of exercises that benefit the adult learner. Aerobic exercise helps improve cardio vascular and cardio respiratory functions. Aerobic exercise is also a good way to loose fat, and keep a lean body. Strength exercise helps build muscle and lose body fat. Strength exercise also helps improve strength, balance, and flexibility in joints. There are plenty of hints and ideas to sticking to a nutrition and fitness plan. The first step to starting is to make that gradual change. Set your goals and boundaries to a plan that fits your lifestyle and age. It is ok not being able to change your diet and fitness goals all at once. You make a difference by making small changes now, and then notice the big changes to your body and health in the future.

Nutrition and Exercise for Adult Learners

Nutrition and Exercise can be a valuable instrument in an adult learner’s life. Proper nutrition helps build a strong immune system (which can help fight diseases), mental well being, and over all general good health. Exercise can help control weight, relieve stress, build strength/flexibility, and increase awareness. Nutrition can be maintained easily through what you eat, how you eat, and when you eat. Exercise can be started slowly and increased gradually to help maintain strength, flexibility, and decrease stress.

The key to understanding and using nutrition wisely is to first realize you will need to make a lifestyle change. Once you know a lifestyle change is needed you can begin to understand more about how to eat nutritiously. The foods you eat can be broken down into different categories. Each category has a proper portion that should be consumed daily. "The different categories and servings sizes are as follows: fats, oils, and sweets use sparingly; milk, yogurt, and cheese limited to 2-3 servings; meat, poultry, dry beans, eggs, and nuts limited to 2-3 servings; vegetable group 3-5 servings; fruit groups 2-4 servings; and bread and rice 6-12 servings.”

Carbohydrates are one of the most important sections of food, but can be easily overindulged. Your muscles and brain are primarily fueled off of carbohydrates. You should include a daily portion of carbohydrate in your diet to ensure that you maintain good muscle, good liver function, and to improve performance and delay fatigue. Carbohydrates are broken down into two groups simple and complex, both groups metabolize into glucose. Simple carbohydrates are sweet and contain one or two sugar molecules. Examples of simple carbohydrates are glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Complex carbohydrates are long chains of sugar best known as starch (ex: brown rice, corn, and shredded wheat). "To keep carbohydrate intake at a healthy level you should consume between 6-11 servings of complex carbohydrates a day."

When starting a nutrition program it is also important to understand fat. Fat helps keep the metabolism working for muscle activity, protects vital organs, and insulates. On a daily basis only 30% of your daily calories should be fat. The two types of fats are cholesterol and triglycerides. Cholesterol is typical found in foods coming from an animal, such as egg yolks, seafood, meats, and dairy. Many people talk of saturated, polyunsaturated, or monounsaturated fats. These three are actually called triglycerides. On the Georgia State University's Department of Kinesiology and Health website they explain these fats like this:

Saturated fats are usually solid at room temperature and come primarily from animal products like meat, poultry, butter, and whole milk. Also, some oils like coconut, palm, and palm kernel oils are high in saturated fats. Dietary saturated fats have the greatest impact on total blood cholesterol. Saturated fat should not exceed 10% of total fat intake. Polyunsaturated fats are usually liquid at room temperature and are found in vegetable oils such a safflower, sunflower, corn, and soybean oils. Monounsaturated fats are also liquid at room temperature and are found in vegetable oils, such as olive and canola oils.

As can be seen by this small paragraph there is a lot to learn when dealing with fat. "The reason it is so important to understand fat is because the over consumption of fat is believed to be one of the leading causes of obesity, heart disease, and different types of cancer." (Univ. of Ga. Website)

Protein can also get very complex. The reason is because proteins are composed of amino acids and there are twenty different kinds of amino acids. Out of these amino acids there are non-essential and essential ones. Non essential amino acids can be made by the body, whereas essential amino acids cannot be made by the body and can only be consumed through food. The essential amino acids are isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. To pack all of the essential amino acids into your diet (this can help with growth and repair of body tissue), you must eat things that are made up of complete proteins. An example of complete proteins are found in eggs, milk, meat, poultry, and fish. The recommended dose of protein per average individual is .8grams per kilogram of body weight a day, for bodybuilders and athletes this number increases to 1.8grams.

The most important element to healthy nutrition is the very thing that makes up 50-75% of the human body. This element also helps with temperature regulation, cellular processes, and body composition. This precious element is water. Water in the body is lost everyday through urination, respiration, and sweat. Without water the human body can suffer from dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, heat cramps, and death. It must be replenished everyday. "Each person needs 64 ounces of water each day; this number increases if exercise or hot/humid environments factor in."

Nutrition labels are on every food product. When reading a nutrition label limit the number of total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium you consume. Make sure you consume a lot of vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, iron, and dietary fibers. "If you pick foods with labels that have these qualities you will be on your way to eating healthier."

Next to nutrition, exercise is very important. Exercise helps the body as well as the brain. Exercising has many great benefits. The greatest one is reducing the risk of premature death. Exercising helps reduce high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the chance of dying from heart disease. For the adult learner exercise can greatly reduce depression, anxiety, stress, and improve psychological well-being. Not to forget it maintains healthy muscles, bones, joints, body weight, and fat.

Exercise is divided into two types: aerobic exercise and strength training. Each one has its own benefits for the adult learner. Aerobic exercise mainly works on the improvement of cardiovascular/cardio respiratory functions (heart and lungs). This gives maximum cardiac output (blood pumped every minute), maximum stroke volume (blood pumped each beat), and reduced stress on the heart. All leading up to the maximum oxygen consumption for the adult learner, which in turn helps the brain work better. Aerobics also lowers high blood pressure, reduces body fat and increases HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Strength training greatly reduces stress and reduces body fat. It also improves flexibility in the joints. In the adult learner it greatly improves strength, balance, and functional ability.

Exercising has many myths, but only a few benefits to the adult learner. As stated earlier, exercise is a way to burn calories. Exercise helps work every part of your body and helps the body to work more efficient. When exercising, there is a "no pain, no gain" concept. Sometimes it may get hard, but the adult learner has to push on and get through the pain to reap the benefits. "The trick is to slowly progress instead of jumping right in. For the adult learner it is never to late to exercise because just like learning, it’s never stops."

It is important to stick to a nutrition and fitness plan, especially while being under the stress of being an adult learner. The following are some ideas on how an adult learning can make gradual changes toward a better fitness and nutrition program.

Changes in a nutritional lifestyle have to be made over a gradual period of time to work effectively. One can start by changing the portion size of what they are eating. "Another guide is to pretend your plate is a clock and the time is 3 p.m. The section between 12 and 3 bordered by the big and little hands should be filled with meat or dairy servings. When your meat or dairy portion goes over that section, then you are eating too much of it. The rest of your plate should be filled with grains and vegetables."

Eating fat free foods are a good way to move toward your nutrition goals but be careful when doing so because manufacturers tend to replace the fat with more sugar and other substances that may be just as harmful as excessive fat. A good hint in substitution of fats, are to replace cup of oil with one cup unsweetened applesauce when following a cake recipe or using a non stick skillet sprayed with cooking spray such as PAM and fat free broth instead of one cup of high fat cooking oil when pan frying meat. You would be surprised at how good recipes taste even though you omitted some or all of the fat in the recipe.

When dining out a good tip would be to ask for the salad dressing on the side or ask that an omelet be cooked with one egg and two egg whites instead of three whole eggs. Another thing to remember is not to be afraid to ask questions when ordering your food at a restaurant. Most restaurants will cater to you diet needs.

Another thing is that it is not good to starve yourself before going to bed. Remember a snack will fuel your body for the 7 to 8 hour fast it goes through when you are at rest.

If you find it difficult to stick to an exercise program, remember that you can break activity down into different time frames. If you want to get in thirty minutes of activity but do not have thirty minutes to spare, try to walk briskly for ten minutes then plan on parking as far way in the parking lot when you go to the market or shopping mall to get in other activity. Walking up the stairs instead of the elevator at your workplace is another helpful way to get in some activity to your day.
